EXCELLENT CONDITIONS IN BARCELONA FOR THE CONDE DE GODO SAILING TROPHY

23-05-2013

The Conde de Godó Sailing Trophy kicked off today with excellent sailing conditions on the water in Barcelona

The Conde de Godó Sailing Trophy kicked off today with excellent sailing conditions on the water in Barcelona, with an average wind (a variable South-Westerly starting at 7 and gradually rising to 15 knots) for the three races in each of the classes that began the first day of racing. The closest results were in the TP52 class where Alberto Roemmers’ AZZURA and Doug de Vos’ QUANTUM RACING with Spaniards Vila and Calafat on board, had a close-knit battle in each of the three races, taking the first and second place in the overall classification respectively. In the less numerous Wally class Open Season dominated by winning each race of the day and was the protagonist of a true Match Race up against their rivals on GALMA.The German team Early Bird in the Soto 40 class finished racing at the top of the leader board, winning two out of the three races and were followed closely behind by José Caldeira’s SOLETE and Luis Martin Cabiedes’ troubled FYORD.

WALLY CLASS: DOMINATION FROM OPEN SEASON

The Wally class was not able to shine in full splendour on the first day of racing. Of the four boats registered to compete, neither Luca Bassani’s TIKETITOO nor Lindsay Owen-Jones’ MAGIC CARPET was able to participate. The three races of the day were dominated by the British boat OPEN SEASON that managed to defeat their rivals on Spainsh boat GALMA.

Pepe Ribes, of team Magic Carpet explained the absence of the boat this morning, “We have had a few last minute problems to solve and the bad weather conditions have meant that we couldn’t get to Barcelona on time. The team is making a huge effort so that we can take part in the Conde de Godo Trophy and we hope that we can be there as soon as possible.”

THE TP52s: AZZURRA AND QUANTUM RACING

The day started with victory for AZZURRA dominating in the first race and marking the rules of the game, leaving an open battle behind them, which Swedish boat RAN knew perfectly how to control. It was a tougher race for the third placed QUANTUM RACING that was able to gradually recover from a more average position to come back from the back to the front of the fleet.

The increasing wind intensity also brought out the best in QUANTUM RACING in the day’s second race that led the American team (with Spaniards Juan Vila and Jordi Calafat among their ranks) in style, and followed by INTERLODGE and the Swedish RAN. The third race was a true head to head between AZZURRA and American QUANTUM RACING with fellow Americans INTERLODGE also in the mix. AZZURRA came up trumps again in the final race followed by QUANTUM RACING and RAN.

THE SOTO 40 PROTAGONISTS OF A TROUBLED DAY

The day began with German team EARLY BIRD skippered by Christian Nagel taking the lead and winning the first two races, with Luis Martin Cabiedes’ FYORD and Marc de Antonio as skipper clocking up two seconds. The day’s main event took place in the third race with an important incident between BLACK PEARL and FYORD leading to the retirement of both participants from the race. With the two boats out of action the final leader board was given a shake-up and saw the second place on the podium move to SOLETE.
