Rats on Fire, king of the Conde de Godó Sailing Trophy for the fifth consecutive year


The Conde de Godó Sailing Trophy, which has been held since 1974 under the organization of the Real Club Nautico de Barcelona and the support of the Godó family, concluded today an exciting 44th edition in Barcelona’s waters, in which Rats on Fire achieved its eighth championship title and the fifth in a row, in the class ORC 0-1. In J80 Bribón-Movistar prevailed, winning its third Godó, while in ORC 2 and ORC 3-4 there was no surprise, with the victory of L'Immens and Fanytas, respectively.

The third and final day of competition of the 44th Conde de Godó Sailing Trophy took place with SE winds of 10 to 14 knots, with frequent changes of direction and intensity. Therefore, the favorite crews and the contenders had to perform at their best in Barcelona.

In ORC 0-1, Rafael Carbonell’s Catalan Swan 45 Rats on Fire, who also helmed the boat today, defended the title of champion with absolute success, achieving his eighth Conde de Godó Sailing Trophy and the fifth consecutive, after a heart-stopping final day, in which he finished third and a second. The boat from the CN Arenys de Mar lead over the second classified by only four points. Santi Monjo’s DK46 Rmotion mounted to the second step of the podium.

"It was a Conde de Godó Sailing Trophy with a really high level of competitors and we managed to be very regular", said Rafael Carbonell, Rats on Fire’s owner, “which made us achieve a new title of champions. We are absolutely thrilled about it, it's something unthinkable when you are racing".

In J80, Marc de Antonio and Sofia Bertrand’s Bribón-Movistar has been crowned, for the third time, champion of the prestigious Real Club Nautico de Barcelona’s regatta. ​​After their victories in 2014 (J80) and 2008 (Platú 25) they add a new one to their CV. With five out of a total of eight races won, Bribón-Movistar finished with a five-point lead over runner-up Pepequin Orbaneja's Pelayo Abogados Marbella Team, who couldn’t revalidate last year's title. Jose Maria Van der Ploeg’s VSA Communication managed to complete the final podium after overtaking in the leaderboard Massimo Rama’s Italian Jeniale-Eurosystem.

In ORC 2, Alexandre Laplaza’s L'Immens, under the helm of Carles Rodriguez, was proclaimed winner of the 44th Conde de Godó Sailing Trophy, thus improving last year’s third place. While in ORC 3-4 the Dufour 34 Fanytas took the victory for the second year in a row, skippered by Ingrid Banús.

The prize giving ceremony took place this afternoon in the race village at the Real Club Náutico de Barcelona and was presided by the director of the Sports Catalan Council of Catalonia’s Government, Toni Reig; the Sports’ Commissioner of Barcelona’s Town Hall, ​​David Escudé; the president of the Catalan Sailing Federation, Xavier Torres; Ana Godó, representing the Godó Group, and Félix Escalas and Marc de Antonio, president and commodore of the RCNB, respectively. During the event, the regatta’s competitor and numerous guests honored the new champions of the 44th Conde de Godó Sailing Trophy.

The 44th Conde de Godó Sailing Trophy is organized by the Real Club Náutico de Barcelona with the collaboration of the Royal Spanish Sailing Federation and the Catalan Sailing Federation. The Trophy has the support of La Vanguardia, the City Council of Barcelona and the Generalitat de Catalunya.
