RATS ON FIRE TAKES ITS TWELFTH TROPHY AND MAKES HISTORY AT THE 48 GODÓ VELA
A cloudy morning in Barcelona on the last day of racing at the 48 Godó Vela. Crews wished for luck with the light winds forecasted. Boats sailed to the racing area with final races scheduled to start at 12.00h but it was a windless start on this last day of racing.
Following a postponement for both fleets, the Race Committee finally gave a start at 14.19h for the J70 in Area Bravo. A few minutes after, the Alfa area Race Committee decided to cancel the races of the day due to the light breeze under the six knots required to give a start.
Rafael Carbonell’s Rats on Fire helmed by Jorge Martín Doreste claimed once again and for the ninth time in a row, the title in category ORC 0-1-2. Their twelfth Godó de vela Trophy that makes them the boat with more victories in the regatta’s record. Second place overall was for Toni Guiu’s TP52 Bluecarbon from RCNB which battled for first place to the last moment following some intense trainings before the regatta. Third place on the podium was completed by Rolf Auf del Maur’s Kajsa III from RCNB.
In ORC 3-4, Nicolás González’s Lady Mariline from YCU-RNCB claimed the victory in their second participation in the Godó vela with excellent results on Friday and Saturday battling fiercely against the favourite boat from past editions, Alexadre Laplaza’s L’Immens-Laplaza Assessors that finished second overall. Gaitero Dos from Club Náutico Ibiza was third overall, in front of Salvador Vieta’s Tramendu, winner of last year’s edition.
The one design fleet could sail one of the three races scheduled with light Garbí, 4-5 knots. J70 Nautia.net - Slow Charter & Racing from RCNP won the race followed by Javier Scherk’s Gunter from RCNB and Ricardo Terrades’s Autolica-Kahaway-Tropicfeel in third place.
Following the eight races sailed, the overall winner in J70 was Ricardo Terrades’s Autolica-Kahaway-Tropicfeel de Ricardo helmed by Luis Martínez Doreste with a total of 16 points. Second place was for Marcelo Baltzer’s Let it Be from RCN Denia with 21 points and third position, also with 21 points, was for Gunter.
The prize giving ceremony was held in the afternoon at Real Club Náutico de Barcelona and it was attended by Mrs. Susana Closa, Manager of Institut Barcelona Esports -Ajuntament de Barcelona; Mr. Xavier Torres, President of the Federació Catalana de Vela; Mrs. Ana Godó, on behalf of Grupo Godó. The president and the commodore of RCNB, Mr. Félix Escalas and Mr. Marc de Antonio respectively, and Navy Captain Javier Moreno Susanna, Barcelona Naval Commander also attended the ceremony.
Marc de Antonio expressed his gratitude for the participation and support of Institutions and collaborators and announced that the next edition of the Trofeo de vela Conde de Godó would extend the participation with the incorporation of the new ORC Double Handed class. The RCNB takes the first steps towards the organisation of the 2023 DOUBLE HANDED EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIP allocated recently to the Club by the ORC.
The commemorative trophy V Centenario de la primera vuelta al Mundo de Juan Sebastián Elcano, was awarded to Nicolás González’s Lady Mariline, the boat with more first places in the regatta.
