Surprises and intensity on the first day of the 45th Conde de Godó Trophy

25-05-2018

The 45th Conde de Godó Trophy, organized by the Real Club Náutico de Barcelona since 1974, has shown on its first day of competition that it will be an intense and exciting edition. Up to 51 boats and some 500 athletes from eight countries have done the first races in Barcelona waters, with demanding and fun conditions, a 15-20 knot NE. Es Tes Unno is the provisional leader of ORC 0-1 after a maneuver error of the favorite Rats on Fire. In ORC 2, L'Immens-Laplaza Assessors has started well to revalidate the title, while the ORC 3-4 battle is served between Airlan Aermec and Vertigo Dos. In J80, Bribón-Movistar is the leader, and current champion of the category.

Rats on Fire, which in the 45th Conde de Godó Trophy fights for its ninth victory and the sixth in a row in ORC 0-1, has opened its box with a victory, but in the second race a maneuver mistake has made them to drop down to 6th place. With this, the Swan 45 by Rafael Carbonell starts the Barcelona regatta in third place. Their top contenders will be the Dufour 44 Es Tes Unno by Francisco Soldevila and the DK 46 Prink of Santi Monjo and Oscar Chaves. The fight will be intense, because in the fourth and fifth places there are also powerful units, Adrián Hoteles of Tenerife and the Swiss Kajsa III.

L'Immens-Laplaza Assessors has presented its credentials to revalidate the title of champion of the Conde de Godó Trophy in ORC 2. Alexandre Laplaza's Sinergia 40, with Carlos Rodríguez as skipper, has added two partial victories in a day of demanding weather conditions. Second is the X-41 Miaja X and third the J-122 Anita. "A very fun and intense first day," said Carlos Rodríguez, skipper of L'Immens-Laplaza Assessors, "with a very nice fight in real time with several boats. It will be necessary to fight well for the victory".

Maximum emotion in ORC 3-4, with a fleet of 19 boats. The X37 Airlan Aermec of the Real Club Náutico de Palma, owned by Juan Cabrer, is provisional leader, with a second and a first in the inaugural races of the 45th Conde de Godó Trophy. But the Salona 37 Vertigo Dos of Antonio Guasch has done a first and a second, so the two units of 37 feet are tied to points. The British Saiola X is placed in the third place, with three points more than the two leaders.

"It's been a very uncomfortable day because of the wave," said Juan Cabrer, Airlan Aermec shipowner, "and we're better off with less sea, but we're happy. It will be an intense fight with Vértido Dos, as it happened in PalmaVela."

Three races have completed the J80 monotypes, after which the Bribón-Movistar of Marc de Antonio and Sofia Bertrand is at the head of the fleet. The defender of the title of the Conde de Godó Trophy has signed a first and two seconds, so they have five points in his locker. With four more points, Mikaku of Rosa Artigas follows. Agustín Altadill's Nacex completes the provisional podium, with two firsts and a DNF. As soon as the discard is introduced, they will be predictably one of the candidates to fight for the victory of the Barcelona regatta.

Tomorrow the first starts are scheduled for midday, with three races scheduled for the ORC and four for the J80.

Organized by the Real Club Nautico de Barcelona with the collaboration of the Royal Spanish Sailing Federation and the Catalan Sailing Federation, the 45th Conde de Godó Sailing Trophy has the support of La Vanguardia, the City Council of Barcelona and the Government of Catalunya. The collaborators are Gramona, Estrella Damm, Nº3, Royal Bliss, VIP Style Magazine and Veri.
