The first day of the 44th Conde de Godó Sailing Trophy offers spectacle and excitement in Barcelona


The 47 boats from eight countries competing in the 44th Conde de Godó Sailing Trophy have completed an exciting first day of regattas in Barcelona’s waters. After today’s races last year's champions in ORC 0-1 and J80, Rats on Fire and Pelayo Abogados Marbella Team, have realized that revalidating the crown will not be an easy task.

The first day of the prestigious regatta organized by the Real Club Nautico de Barcelona took place with a medium Southerly land breeze, of about 10 knots in the inaugural races and decreased to around 7 knots of wind speed for the following ones.

The fleet of larger cruisers, grouped in the class ORC 0-1, confirmed that this will be a Conde de Godó Sailing Trophy of intense emotions and maximum rivalry, with very tight arrivals between several opponents. Rafael Carbonell’s Swan 45 Rats on Fire clearly fights for his eighth victory in the famous competition of the Real Club Nautico de Barcelona and scored a second and a first place today. But defending the title will not be easy, and in fact in second place, tied in points, is Jaime Monjo and Josele Doreste’s DK46 R-Motion. Another DK46, Álvaro Irala and Fernando León’s Maserati, is placed in third place, while Portuguese Fifty by Storax and Swiss Kajsa III march fourth and fifth, respectively.

In the smaller class, ORC 3-4, the Banús family’s Dufour 34 Fanytas has their second consecutive victory in the Conde de Godó Sailing Trophy on track, after scoring winning both races today.

The J80 one design sailed three race, with Marc de Antonio and Sofia Bertrand’s Bribón-Movistar winning all three of them. The Catalan team wants to reengage again with the glory in Barcelona’s waters, after having tasted it already in 2014. With two second places and a third in today’s races, Massimo Rama’s Italian Eurosystem jumps to the second step of the provisional podium.

The 44th Conde de Godó Sailing Trophy is organized by the Real Club Náutico de Barcelona with the collaboration of the Royal Spanish Sailing Federation and the Catalan Sailing Federation. The Trophy has the support of La Vanguardia, the City Council of Barcelona and the Generalitat de Catalunya. Rats on Fire crowned champion of the Conde de Godó Trophy for the sixth consecutive year
