The Trophy will take place from May 24th to 28th with the participation of 90 boats and 550 sailors from around the world, featuring two racing courses and the inclusion of the women's monohull class.
During Saturday and Sunday, the Conde de Godó Sailing Trophy village will host an exhibition of the America's Cup alongside the Godó Trophy.
The Real Club Náutico de Barcelona (RCNB) was the venue for the official presentation to the media of the 50th edition of the Count of Godó Sailing Trophy, held on Wednesday, May 10th, at 12:00 PM. With registration open until May 19th, 90 teams have already pre-registered. The event will take place in the waters of Barcelona from May 24th to 28th.
The event was attended by Jordi Puig, president of the RCNB, accompanied by Alex Villatoro, director of the Consell Català de l'Esport de la Generalitat de Catalunya; David Escudé, Sports Councilor of the Barcelona City Council; Xavier Torres, president of the Catalan Sailing Federation; Ana Godó, vice president of the RCNB and representative of the Godó family; and Pablo Garriga, commodore of the RCNB and race director. Also present as guests were Mack Dalton, son of Grant Dalton, CEO of the America's Cup.
Jordi Puig, president of the RCNB, welcomed the authorities and media, stating, "This year's Conde de Godó Trophy will be a very special edition, both in terms of sport and social aspects. We will have an exclusive village with a great festive program. I want to highlight that we will have the privilege of hosting the exhibition of the America's Cup trophy alongside the Godó Trophy, which is particularly exciting for us. Additionally, we will have Grant Dalton's presence during the prize-giving ceremony." He concluded by thanking the institutions and sponsors for their support.
Ana Godó, vice president of the RCNB and representative of the Godó family, expressed, "Half a century later, the Trophy maintains the ideas that drove it in 1974. This anniversary reaffirms, on behalf of my father Carlos and my family, our commitment to the Trophy. The Board of Directors and the entire RCNB team have worked with great enthusiasm in a year when the atmosphere preceding the America's Cup is in the air. We are proud, as a Club and a city, to be at the center of the world's greatest nautical sporting event."
Pablo Garriga, commodore of the RCNB and race director, took the opportunity to provide technical details: "The Trophy will feature the participation of 90 boats and 15 nationalities with top-level sailors, divided into eight divisions: a separate classification in ORC 0, the ORC 0-1 class with the confirmed participation of Aifos, the ORC 2 and ORC 3-4 classes. The ORC A2 fleet will compete in two races, a long one on Thursday with 160 miles and a second one on Saturday with 60 miles, serving as a training session for the ORC Two-Handed World Championship that we will host in September. The monohull class includes the new women's class with six units, as well as the well-established J70 fleet of the Club, which will be joined by units from Galicia, and we expect great participation since the Spanish Cup will have taken place here the previous weekend and next year the World Championship will be held in Palma."
Xavier Torres, president of the Catalan Sailing Federation, added, "50 editions that attest to the success of this sporting event, which is the most important in the field of sailing in the city, organized by a great Club and a great city that make these major sports events possible."
Alex Villatoro, Director of the Consell Català de l'Esport of the Generalitat de Catalunya, expressed his gratitude to the RCNB for their commitment to promoting women's sports and grassroots sports, bringing the world of sailing to a wider audience in the privileged setting of the city of Barcelona.
David Escudé: "On behalf of the Barcelona City Council, I would like to express gratitude for the promotional work and commitment to making the city of Barcelona see the sea as a source of opportunities." He highlighted that this year, for the first time in history, 40 schools have had their first experience at sea, and he thanked the Club and the Catalan Sailing Federation for their involvement and promotion.
